William C. Ozmon, Jr., of Hereford, AZ, passed away at the age of 95 on March 19, 2021, the feast day of St. Joseph. Bill was born in Brooklyn, and spent the majority of his life living in North Babylon, NY. Like St. Joseph, his personal favorite, Bill was good with a hammer; he single-handedly finished a basement and converted an attic, and he helped build a deck and two sheds so sturdy they will still be standing decades from now.
Bill was an avid early adopter of the latest gadgets and technology. This interest carried over into one of his community service projects, in which he spent several years instructing students in entrepreneurship skills via Junior Achievement. He also expanded a Nassau County organization, the Sea Rangers, by leading two battalions near his home in Suffolk County.
Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronic Technician’s Mate Third Class aboard the USS Astoria. He survived the 100-foot waves of the Typhoon of 1944, and participated in many World War II campaigns in the Pacific including the Battle of Iwo Jima. He received several medals during his service, such as the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal 4 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon 1 star.
Bill was employed by Western Electric, working his way up to the position of Methods Analyst Coordinator. He worked there for a total of 42 years.
Bill is predeceased by his wife, Margaret (of 51 years), parents Anna E. (Craven) and William C. Ozmon, Sr., and two sisters, Ann Kadel and Kay Gilmore. He is survived by his 4 children - Terry (& Bob) Edwards of Pittstown, NJ; Bill (& Deb) Ozmon of Catskill, NY; Anne (& Michael) Castello of Hereford, AZ; and Bob (& Rose) Ozmon of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Jason, David, Charlie, Kelly, Kevin, Jennifer, Tim, Colin, Shannon, Trevor, and Ryan; 7 great-grandchildren: Kateri, Lawrence, Jakin, Miles, Arlo, Oliver, and Bodhi; and by many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista, AZ on Tuesday, March 23 from 4 - 7 p.m. A funeral Mass with Military Honors will be celebrated at St. John the Divine Anglican Rite Catholic Church, 6752 E. Ramsey Road in Hereford, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24. Live streaming of a New York funeral Mass and graveside service will be offered sometime after that. Details will be on the Claude R. Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home (Babylon) website.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in Bill's honor to his favorite charity, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
