William Edward Burns
November 13, 1949 - January 10, 2025
William Edward Burns, born on November 13, 1949, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home in Sierra Vista, Arizona, on January 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
William grew up in Stephentown, New York, and graduated from Berlin High School in 1968. In 1969, he proudly joined the United States Army and served his country as a Vietnam veteran from 1969 to 1970. His dedication to service continued throughout his life.
In 1978, William began his career with the Sierra Vista Police Department, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1999. Even after retiring, he remained deeply committed to his community as a reserve officer until 2008. During this time, he became a beloved D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) instructor in 1990 and a G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) instructor in 1992, teaching and mentoring youth in Sierra Vista Public Schools.
William’s passion for guiding and inspiring young people extended beyond the classroom. He managed Vista Lanes bowling alley for many years and ran the youth bowling league, fostering a love of the sport among countless young bowlers. He also worked as a security guard and behavioral coach at local schools, always striving to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
William was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Burns and Eleanor Burns; his father- and mother-in-law, Wallace F. Swingle and Mary Lou Swingle; and his brothers-in-law, Joseph Dixon and Fred Swingle. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marjorie L. Burns; his children, Will Burns and Bryan and Beverly Thiel; grandchildren Brilynn and Breann Gonzalez; his sister Elsa Pittman and her husband Tom Pittman; their children Eric (wife Mary) and Abigail; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A service will be held on January 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on 1300 Buffalo Soldier Trail in Sierra Vista. Those who wish to attend should arrive in the staging aread by 1:30 PM. A reception will follow at the Bob F. Curio VFW Post #9972.
William’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to others will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those he touched so profoundly.
