Socorro C. Nunez passed away peacefully in her home on October 12, 2025 at the age of 104. She was born January 20th, 1921, in Tempe, Az to Jesus Cordova and Antonia (Cano) Cordova. She is the last of 9 siblings. In her early life, Socorro lived in both Tempe, Az and San Ignacio, Sonora. She traveled to and from both locations with her parents who were migrant workers. After the untimely death of her father, she helped her mother run a restaurant out of their Mexico home feeding farm workers. At the age of 26 she returned to Gilbert, Az and met the love of her life, Lawrence R. Nunez. They soon married and welcomed their first son Ed. Lawrence, an Army Air Corps veteran, later found work in Flagstaff with CCC Camps and they soon welcomed their daughter Mary Dolores. In 1954 he was transferred to Fort Huachuca as a Civil Servant. Taking up residence in Tombstone, Az they welcomed their next three children, Gloria, Sarah and David. In addition to taking care of the home and children, Socorro helped her husband provide for the family by selling tortillas, tamales and food plates to the locals of Tombstone. She would become a widow in 1981 and never remarry.
She is survived by her children Ed Nunez, Mary D. Traywick, Gloria McCann, Sarah Nunez (Spouse Arnold Nunez) and David Nunez. Her grandchildren Candy Nunez, Nicole Nunez, Eddie Nunez, Peter Vasquez, Michael Vasquez, Luci Harke, Christopher Vasquez, Thomas McCann, Lisa McCann, Amanda Rankin, Christina Kristick, Kayla McCann, Rudy Nunez, Jeanette Nunez, Adrienne Weiss and Allison Goeckner. Including 44 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren. Socorro has long been a beloved member of the community and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Tombstone on November 15th to include a Rosary at 9:30 followed by Mass at 10:00am. Church services will be followed by A potluck reception located at the Tombstone American Legion at 11:00am. Burial services will be located at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery on November 17th at 11:00am.
