SFC Jerry Hopper Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Jerry Van Hopper.

His life is exactly the story of The Grapes of Wrath! Starting in Oklahoma as a kid and during the dust bowl his family moved to California and became fruit ranch laborers. The term “Okie” was a badge of honor to my father.

In 1953 he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War he also served in Vietnam, serving during the Tet offensive! During his long military career he was awarded many awards to include a Bronze Star!

He met my mother Connie Hopper in 1956 at the old roller rink in Sierra Vista Az. they were married in 1957.

After his retirement from the Army in 1973, Jerry began his new career as a civil servant on Ft. Huachuca and again retiring in 1993. After retiring again he was on the Whetstone Fire department board he was instrumental in getting it where it is today. He has had a glorious long life with many achievements. One of his favorite things to do was coaching Little League at Whetstone Little League in the 70’s and 80’s he loved all the kids in our community and many contributed him as one of the best coaches they’ve ever had! After Baseball he began to fish “A LOT” he loved Patagonia lake and fishing in Mexico hanging with his Buddies! There are plenty of pictures hanging in Sunny’s restaurant of their endeavors and fish stories!

Jerry is survived by his wife Connie Hopper of 68 years, son Jimmy Hopper( Maggie) of Florence Az. Grandkids Ryan, Brandon, Jimmy Jr, Mika, Tesla, Marsha, Justin, Erica. (11) great Grand kids.
