Roy Dale Greenwood

Roy Dale Greenwood, passed away peacefully, aged 86 at his home surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, in Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was born on January 5th, 1937, to William Henry Adcock & Edith Evelyn Harris in Nashville, Tennessee. After his parents’ divorce, Roy was adopted by his 3rd stepfather, Porter Clifton “Cliff” Greenwood, who gave him the Greenwood surname. Roy joined the US Navy Reserves on July 1st, 1954, just after the Armistice with Korea was signed in 1953. He was sent to the U.S. Naval Training Center (USNTC) at Bainbridge, Maryland. After graduation, he was stationed on the tanker USS Canisteo AO-99 in Norfolk, Virginia. Roy was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 23rd, 1956, with rank of SN E-3. He used to say he loved going around the world on his ship, and even visited Pompeii and the Mediterranean.
On February 14th, 1958 he joined the Air Force. After two weeks of retraining and outfitting at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas, he was assigned to the 70th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was next assigned to the Torrejon AFB in Spain, and he was assigned to the 497th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. While in Spain, he learned Castilian Spanish by visiting the bars. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force on April 16th, 1962 with the rank of Airman 1st Class.
He married first Ethel Jennette Hickox in 1958 and after his divorce in 1968, married second Mrs. Shirley (nee Sharp) Engel on April 10th, 1982, in a lovely ceremony at the Lakeside Officers Club on Ft. Huachuca. They had been married 41 years at the time of his death. Roy and Shirley made their home in Sierra Vista, along with Renee, and grandchildren Lessa and Amber. Roy served as a police officer for the city of Sierra Vista and was also in civil service at Ft. Huachuca. Roy was active in the Rotary Club, Jaguar Car Club; he was co-founder of the San Pedro & Southwestern Railroad Club, a member of the Arizona Rail Passenger Association, & he was co-chair of the Venues Committee for the annual Cochise Cowboy Poetry & Music Gathering.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Greenwood; children Ryal C. Greenwood, Joanna Heath, John Story, & Danny Story; stepchildren Brett (Ranay) Engel & Renee A. Greenwood; grandchildren Mrs. Kristin (Chris) Schritter, Lessa Greenwood, Mrs. Amber (Mike) Douglas; great-grandchildren James R. Acevedo, Brooklyn Schritter & Cooper Schritter.
