It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived that we celebrate the life of Robert Louis Williams, who entered into eternal rest on July 10, 2026, at Canyon Vista Medical Center in Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was 88 years old.

Robert was born on May 19, 1938, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late James Williams and Annie Jackson Williams. Raised with strong Christian values, discipline, and an unwavering work ethic, Robert dedicated his life to serving God, his country, his family, and his community. Throughout his life, he was known as a man of integrity, wisdom, compassion, and quiet strength whose influence extended far beyond his own household.

Robert began his military service around 1957 and devoted a total of 29 years to the United States Army. During his distinguished career, he served in several demanding roles and ultimately retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer Two. He worked as a paralegal administrator, supporting the Army’s legal and military justice mission with professionalism, precision, and honor.

Robert’s military service included duty during the Vietnam era, where he demonstrated extraordinary courage under dangerous circumstances. During a deployment to Vietnam in 1962–1963, the helicopter carrying Robert and several fellow service members was shot down and exploded in enemy territory. Stranded in the jungle, Robert and the surviving crew members successfully evaded enemy capture until they were recovered by friendly forces the following day. His bravery and heroic service were recognized with the Bronze Star Medal.

Throughout his military career, Robert earned numerous additional awards and decorations, including the Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (Sixth Award), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, Crew Chief Wings, Parachutist Badge, and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, among others.

Robert firmly believed that education opened doors to service, leadership, and personal growth. He earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice, continually pursuing knowledge that would allow him to better serve others. Following his military retirement, he built a successful second career as a Realtor in Sierra Vista, Arizona, where he became known for his honesty, professionalism, and dedication to helping families find a place to call home.

Robert’s heart for service extended well beyond his military and professional accomplishments. He faithfully served on the Usher Board at Main Post Chapel, Fort Huachuca, was a proud member of the Lions Club, and dedicated approximately fourteen years as a CASA—Court Appointed Special Advocate—Guardian ad Litem in Cochise County, Arizona. In that role, he advocated for abused and neglected children, offering them a voice, protection, and hope during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Together with his beloved wife, Rachel Mae Williams, Robert also co-owned Williams Beauty & Barber Supply and International House of Beauty, supporting local entrepreneurs and serving the surrounding community.

Above all, Robert cherished his family. He married the love of his life, Rachel Mae Williams, around the time he entered military service, and together they built a lasting legacy grounded in faith, love, sacrifice, and perseverance. He took great pride in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, always offering encouragement, wisdom, and steadfast support. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and unwavering belief in doing what was right left a lasting impression on everyone privileged to know him.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, James Williams and Annie Jackson Williams; his son, Robert L. Williams, Jr.; and his sister, Jimmie Lee Williams Denson McCray.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Rachel Mae Williams; his children, Sharon Williams Willett, widow of the late Herbert Willett; Gregory T. Williams and his wife, Sharon Williams, of Tucson, Arizona; Alvin D. Williams of Tucson, Arizona; and Michael E. Williams and his wife, Judy Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; his brother, James Williams, Sr. of Detroit, Michigan; his sisters, Dorothy Bell, Josephine Bates, and the Reverend Ozell Bates all of Birmingham, AL; and a host of beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.

Robert will be remembered as a faithful servant of God, a decorated veteran, a courageous soldier, an accomplished military legal administrator, a community advocate, a mentor, a businessman, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His life was a testament to faith, service, sacrifice, courage, and unconditional love. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue through the lives he touched and the values he instilled in those who knew and loved him.
