Oscar Edward Lowery was born on September 11, 1938, in Sandy Grove, Clarendon County, South Carolina. He was the sixth of eleven children born to his late parents, John and Sadie Lowery, and a beloved brother whose life was deeply rooted in family. He is preceded in death by his brothers Preston (Sadie Mae), Cornell (Eva), John (Ellaree), Thomas, Charles Lowery and his sisters Annie Prince (Mose), Alice McClam (John), Azalee McKenzie (Clarence) and Sadie Simpson (Johnny). He is lovingly survived by his sibling Joseph Lowery (Mariah).
Oscar was a devoted and loving husband to Phyllis A. Hail (deceased), whom he married on January 19, 1968, in Jackson Missouri. He was the proud father of three children and embraced three additional bonus children with love. He leaves behind his children: Della Lowery, Lora Malcom (Glen), Greg Gilbert (Rene), Trina Gilbert, Carl Hail (Tamara), James Hail (Vickie) and Virgil Hail (Florentina), along with twenty-two grandchildren and countless great grandchildren, all of whom were a source of joy and pride.
Oscar peacefully departed this life in the early hours of January 28, 2026. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather whose life reflected humility, strength, and purpose. His distinguished military career spanned 30 years of honorable service from September 29, 1961, to December 31, 1991, during which he earned numerous commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal.
To those who loved him, he was Oscar, Dad, Granddad, Grandpa and PopPop. A traveler by nature, he would drive any distance and, in any direction, to be present for his family. While his military service was admirable, the value he most intentionally instilled was the importance of education, perseverance, and pursuing your life’s goals. If there was a desire to learn more or go further, or big life-changing decisions, he was always there, steadfast in his support. Graduations, weddings, or special moments, quietly cheering you on.
A man of valor, quiet strength, Oscar E. Lowery loved his family and served his country in his own faithful way. His life stands as a beautiful testament to having “lived a good life,” given generously, and asked for little in return.
Rest in peace Oscar Edward Lowery. Your legacy lives on through the lives you have touched and the family you cherished.
