Mike Hayhurst passed away peacefully at home on May 31, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. Mike was born in Tucson, AZ, on November 29, 1941, and was the son of Dr. Darrell E. and Mary Fern Hayhurst.
He attended Tucson High School where he played football and later went on to Northern Arizona University where he graduated with a degree in Chemistry/Biology and Education. While attending he also played football for the Lumberjacks.
In 1967 he married Jeannie, his wife of 53 years. Mike is survived by his wife, his three children, Patrick, Teri, and Jana, his seven grandchildren, one brother, one niece, and two nephews, and two great-grandchildren. Mike is preceded in death by both parents. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Mike taught high school Chemistry and Physics and coached football at several different high schools, including Benson, Buena, and Tombstone over the course of 52 years. His second career was that of cattle ranching on the Brookline Ranch in Cochise County where he resided for 33 years and won several awards for excellence in range management and conservation practices.
Hatfield Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. Mike’s memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista, AZ, on June 9, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. Following Mass, there will be a luncheon in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. The family of Mike Hayhurst wishes to thank Fr. Greg and the Funeral Reception Committee for all their help.
