Harlan Bradford, Sr. Obituary

On September 16, 2024, the world lost a man whose life was filled with adventure, service, and love. Harlan Leroy Bradford, Sr., affectionately known as "Brad," passed away at 94, leaving behind a rich legacy of dedication, laughter, and leadership.

Born in the small town of Mayview, Missouri, on August 6, 1930 to Porter and Jessie Bradford. Harlan’s early life was shaped by his rural upbringing and the bonds he forged across racial lines. He graduated from Douglas School in 1948, commuting daily by train to Higginsville due to segregation. Just days after his graduation, Harlan began his storied military career, joining the U.S. Army on June 1, 1948. His service would span 30 years, taking him around the world, including tours in Germany, France, Ethiopia, Korea, Vietnam, and Italy.

Harlan served with distinction in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, specializing in intelligence and rising to the prestigious rank of Sergeant Major. His fluency in multiple languages—English, German, French, and Italian—enabled him to connect with people from all walks of life, particularly during his beloved six-year stationing in Italy. He cherished the Italian culture, considering it his second home.

He received numerous awards and certification over his lifetime and as a life-long learner, he earned several degrees to include a dual Master of Arts in Management/Human Relations and Organizational Behavior.

In 1955, while stationed at the Red River Arsenal, Harlan married the love of his life, Bessie Lee Kendrick. Together, they celebrated 69 years of marriage, filled with joy, humor, and deep companionship. They raised two children, LaWanna and Harlan, Jr., and later became proud grandparents to twins Madison and Mason.

After retiring from the military in 1978, Harlan continued to serve his country as a Management Analyst for the Department of Defense for 14 more years. His dedication to his community was unwavering, exemplified by his leadership roles on the Board of Directors for the American Southwest Credit Union, the Southwest Association of the Buffalo Soldiers, and as Chaplain for the National Association for Retired Federal Employees, and numerous other organizations. He was also instrumental in preserving African American history, helping save the Black Officer’s Club at Fort Huachuca.

Harlan's faith was central to his life. A founding member of Shiloh Christian Ministries in Sierra Vista, Arizona, he and his wife served as deacons and greeters for nearly five decades. His commitment to his church and his community was a testament to his deep spiritual convictions.

An avid reader, storyteller, and writer, Harlan authored two children’s books for his grandchildren. His love for sharing stories extended to the stage, where he performed in plays and even appeared in the Italian film Lucky Luciano. A man of many talents, he was known for his humor, often performing stand-up comedy at local events and delighting in birthday celebrations.

Harlan Leroy Bradford, Sr. lived a life of service, joy, and devotion. He is survived by his wife Bessie, children LaWanna and Harlan, Jr., grandchildren Madison and Mason, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. His legacy of love and laughter will continue to inspire all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed.
