Gregory L. Johnson, age 78, of Sierra Vista, Arizona passed away at his home on November 6, 2024 after a long/short illness. Greg was born in Oak Park (Chicago), Illinois on August 29, 1946 son of the late Lawrence H. and Dorothy E. Johnson.
He is survived by his brother John William Johnson of Hazelhurst, Wisconsin, daughter Jennifer, grandson Justin, and his beloved wife of 32 years Suzanne.
Greg graduated from Lane Technical High School, attended North Park College where he achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Economics/Business. After that he attended Northern Illinois University achieving a Master of Business Administration degree. In 1969 he entered the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1971 achieving the rank of Sergeant (E-5). Upon discharge he completed his Master’s degree and with his brother John took over the family’s hotel business that they ran together until its sale in 2001.
At the ripe old age of 40 he decided to go to law school and received his Juris Doctor graduating cum laude. After the sale of his family’s hotel business Greg and Suzanne moved to Vermont to his beloved Ledgeview log home on 46 acres with 109 apple trees. He was hired by the College of St. Joseph (Rutland) and as Associate Professor taught business, hospitality management, and law until 2006. Every spring thereafter they vacationed in Arizona at the Tanque Verde dude ranch and always were interest in retiring in the Grand Canyon state.
In 2006 Greg answered a help wanted ad by the Cochise County Attorney’s Office, was hired and prepared to move to Sierra Vista. He served as a felony prosecutor from that time until his retirement in 2013. Since his retirement he has volunteered at the Sierra Vista Police Department, served as Cochise County hearing officer for building and zoning complaints, and served on the City of Sierra Vista city council. He also was a Republican Precinct Committeeman.
His hobbies included computers, amateur radio, recreational shooting and gun collecting, reading, and watching his Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks. He was a member of American Legion Post 52, the Cochise Gun Club, and associate member of Huachuca Area Republican Women.
A brief military memorial service at the Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery will be held on December 2, 2024, Monday at 1:00 PM.
