Frank Leslie Yohe, Jr
April 2, 1936 - November 16, 2024
Frank Leslie Yohe, Jr, 88, of Sierra Vista, AZ, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Frank was born in Ottumwa, IA, on April 2, 1936, to Frank (Sr) and Ruth Yohe. He lived there for a time before the family moved to Quincy, IL. After several years, the family moved to Royal Oak, MI, where he graduated from Royal Oak High School in 1954. After a year at Wayne College in Detroit, he entered the Air Force. He served most of his enlistment in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1958. He then began work at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). During this time, he also graduated from Aurora College in Illinois. Frank worked his entire career with the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller, and also as a Project Manager and Consultant for some of the FAA's larger computer upgrades. He owned a Luscombe single-engine airplane and loved to fly as a hobby.
Frank married Marilyn "Kay" Phillips on February 16, 1970. They moved around to many locations with the FAA including Aurora, IL, Olathe, KS, Oklahoma City, OK, and Washington, DC. In retirement, Frank and Kay moved to Mesa, AZ, and they loved to travel with their motor home. Frank was an avid amateur "ham" radio operator. Frank and Kay traveled across the country doing "county hunting", which involved making two-way contact with someone in each of the over 3000 counties across the country. They accomplished this several times, including the counties in Hawaii and Alaska. They attended Radio Conventions across the country where they enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow radio enthusiasts and often won awards for their work.
Frank will be remembered for his no-nonsense approach to life, his story-telling, dry wit and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Kay, his beloved wife of 54 years; sister Lois (Tom) of Mt Clemens, MI and brother David (Jean) of Jackson, MI, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Julie Siddens, Kay's niece, for all the care and support she provided to Frank during his time in Sierra Vista.
