Donald "Don" Sywassink Obituary

Donald Lewis Sywassink
March 10, 1931  ~ May 9, 2026

Donald "Don" Sywassink, born on March 10, 1931, in Adrian, Michigan, passed away on May 9, 2026 in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

Don graduated from Adrian High School and pursued higher education at Alma College and the University of Wyoming. An Eagle Scout with Palms, he also earned the God and Country Award and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. In the 1960s, Don served as a Sergeant in the Arizona Rangers.

A dedicated educator, Don taught science and math in Michigan and Arizona, including Buena High School from 1963 to 1968. Later, he transitioned to a career as a rural mail carrier in 1979, serving areas south of Sierra Vista until his retirement in 1993.

Don was an avid railroad enthusiast throughout his life. He belonged to several railroad groups and historical societies and authored a self-published book titled *Railroad Memories*. His passion for community service was evident through his contributions to Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes in the wider Sierra Vista area.

A man of faith, Don was a charter member of the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. He performed as a tenor soloist on numerous occasions during his life. He also lent his voice to the Sierra Vista Community Chorus. Licensed as an amateur ham radio operator since 1956, his call sign became K7ZI0 after moving to Arizona.

Don was deeply involved with the Lions Club, where he was a life member, Melvin Jones Fellow, board member, and held various leadership positions in local and district offices.

He is survived by his children Jon (Larry Seubert), Debbie Hruschka, and Mark (Diane); and granddaughter Denise Hruschka. He was predeceased by his dear wife Eileen on April 12, his parents Harold and Julia Sywassink, and his brother George.

A Celebration of both Don and Eileen's lives will be held at Mountain View Gardens with their fellow residents at 10:30 a.m. on May 19. In the afternoon, their lives will be celebrated at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m.

Don's legacy is one of dedication to education, community service, and his many passions. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
