David Lee Thies

To know Dave was to know that if a Minnesota team was playing, he was watching. If music was playing, he was air drumming along with it, and if he walked into the room, you knew he had arrived. Dave was never one to blend into the background. He loved telling stories, making people laugh, and whether you found yourself laughing with him, shaking your head at him, or both, he left an impression that was impossible to forget.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Lee Thies, who passed away at the age of 58.

Dave proudly served in the United States Army for ten years, a chapter of his life that remained one of his greatest sources of pride. Serving his country was an honor he carried with him throughout his life, and he was proud to have worn the uniform. After leaving the Army, he continued his commitment to those in uniform through a career in civil service, where he worked as a communications equipment test officer at the Electronic Proving Ground at Fort Huachuca. His work helped evaluate and improve the equipment relied upon by America's soldiers, a role he was proud to fulfill until his retirement.

To know Dave was to know his love of sports. A devoted Minnesota fan through and through, he faithfully cheered on the Vikings, the Wild, the Gophers, and just about every team his home state had to offer. Whether he was watching a game, discussing the latest season, or celebrating a victory, his enthusiasm was contagious. Sports were more than entertainment—they were a passion that connected him with family, friends, and countless conversations over the years.

He also found great joy on the softball field, where he spent many years playing the game he loved. Through softball, he formed lifelong friendships and created memories that extended far beyond the final inning. His competitive spirit, love of the game, and camaraderie with teammates became an essential part of his life.

Music was another constant throughout his life. The energy of '80s rock and pop held a special place in his heart. In more recent years, he found comfort and peace in Christian music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Thies and Janice Thies

He is survived by his children, Brittany Sams and Ashlyn Maddy; his five beloved grandchildren; his siblings, Michael Thies, Julie Warner, John Thies, James Thies, Richard Thies, Douglas Thies, and Rebecca Lundin; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, teammates, and dear friends whose lives were made richer by knowing him. Through Dave, many of them found their home here in beautiful Sierra Vista.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared their prayers, kind words, and cherished memories. Your love and support have been a tremendous comfort during this difficult time.

A funeral service with military honors will be held on July 28th at 1:00pm at Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of his life.

In honor of Dave, cheer a little louder for your favorite team, listen to a song that brings back a good memory, spend time with the people you love, and remember the moments that made him who he was.
