David Alan Santor Sr., age 80, of Sierra Vista, Arizona, passed away peacefully in his sleep during the early morning hours of Friday, November 28, 2025, at Haven Health in Sierra Vista. David had battled multiple serious medical issues for the last several years.
David was born January 31, 1945, in Burlington, Vermont, to Frederick and Velma Santor. He moved to Sierra Vista at a very young age and remained deeply rooted in the community for the rest of his life. He attended Buena High School and graduated with the Class of 1963. Later in life, he earned his college degree from the University of Phoenix in 1992—an achievement that reflected his belief in lifelong learning and personal growth.
David served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after the tragic loss of his brother in the war, a family heartbreak that stayed with him always.
A man defined by service, David dedicated nearly four decades to protecting and guiding the city of Sierra Vista through his work in law enforcement. He joined the Sierra Vista Police Department in 1968 and served until his retirement in 2006, culminating his career as Chief of Police. As a sergeant, he attended the FBI National Academy in 1979—an experience he regarded with pride and that further shaped his commitment to excellence in policing and leadership.
David taught at Cochise Community College as a professor in law enforcement and related courses, sharing his knowledge, humor, and practical wisdom with the next generation. Even after retirement, David never stopped serving. He was appointed as the historian for the City of Sierra Vista, becoming a beloved storyteller of the community’s past. He was frequently invited to speak at local historical events, and he took special joy in restoring the city’s very first police vehicle, which he proudly displayed at car shows and civic gatherings.
David was a member and past master of the King Soloman Masonic Lodge in Tombstone as well as being a member of the Scottish Rite and Sabbar Shriners in Tucson. He was an avid reader of non-fiction, especially anything relating to World War II. He also had a passion for genealogy and collected police, military, and emergency service patches from around the globe. David loved Chargers football, all dogs especially boxers, cigars, Ram trucks and a glass of good bourbon.
David is survived by Susan, his devoted wife of over 46 years. He is also survived by his children: Robert (Katie) Santor of Huachuca City, Arizona; Shawna (Dave) Willis of Gilbert, Arizona; Samantha (Alvin Wolcott) Santor of Kent, Washington; and David Santor Jr. of Allen, Texas.
He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Amanda Vanderveen, J.D. Willis, Clayton Santor, Danica Santor, Zoe Wolcott, Carter Santor, and Xander Wolcott; and by his great-grandchildren, Hunter and Finley Vanderveen.
David was preceded in death by his father, Frederick, mother, Velma and step-mother, Mary Jane; his sisters Pat McLaughlin and Barbara Flickinger; and his brother Robert Paul Santor.
