Dale Quast Obituary

Dale Gustave Quast, 92 of Sierra Vista, Arizona passed away on June 5, 2024. He was born on February 14, 1932 in Menno, South Dakota to the late Gust Quast and Anna Quast (Schaffer). In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eldie (Reiland), Viola (Clancey), Ardean (Bender), Anita (Lawe) and his brother Melvin.

Dale is survived by his wife Hazel Quast (Miller), their children Steven Quast (Diane) and Barbara Penstone (Stephen), grandchildren Robert Quast (Tasha) and Alishea Andersen (James), great-grandchildren Jessica Quast, Logan Quast, Michael Quast, Josalyn Andersen and Thomas Andersen and one great-great-grandchild Howell Quast.

Dale was an independent individual. He left Menno High School a year early and went to California to work in the Bakersfield oil industry. He headed back to Menno and then to Dearborn, MI to be near his future wife. He worked on the GM assembly line and married Hazel in 1951.

He went to barber college and opened his own shop. He joined the U.S. Army and served 2 years, with a tour of duty in Korea. He graduated from the University of South Dakota, earning his bachelor’s degree, and then moved to California to begin teaching.

While in CA he earned his pilot’s license. He owned a Tri-Pacer, a Bonanza and then a Travel Air. He also became a flight instructor. After 8 years teaching, he purchased The Trails Motel in Lone Pine, CA. In 1971 he sold the motel and the family moved to Choteau, MT where he purchased the Phillips 66 service station. When the kids graduated from high school he moved to Idaho Falls where he drove a charter bus and built Butler steel buildings.

He bought his first “Big Rig” in 1979 and started pulling mobile homes. Dad drove the rig and Mom drove the “wide load” pilot car. Later they bought a motel in Homedale, ID and Dad started driving 18 wheelers cross country for Martin Transport.

They settled in Phoenix, AZ at the Arizona Lutheran Retirement Center. They worked with WELS Kingdom Workers to build churches, school buildings and camp facilities in Wisconsin and Arizona. Other summers they worked as campground hosts in the Arizona mountains for 3 months at a time. They settled in Sierra Vista in 2009. Dad always stood up when he sang “Stand up, stand up for Jesus”
