In Memoriam
It is with somber hearts that we announce the passing of Carol LaRue Szedlak, on April 1, 2025, at the age of 89.
She was known for her remarkable spirit and distinctive self-expression. She played life to her own tune both literally and figuratively.
Carol was born on November 30, 1935, in Michigan.
From an early age, she cultivated a passion for nature, reading, and music. After completing her high school education, she pursued a career as a secretary, though her enduring interests lay in art and especially music. Carol consistently engaged with community choirs, quartets, and various musical groups. Her proficiency extended to playing the piano, cello, recorder, and more. Music played a pivotal role in her life, and she often encouraged others to engage in it alongside her. Carol constantly shared her love for music, even in the most unassuming moments, whether she was humming, walking, or gracefully swaying to nature’s melodies. Carol's love of nature was another deep part of who she was. She cherished the gentle rustling of leaves, the symphony of birdsong, and the fresh, invigorating scent of morning dew. Carol frequently urged others to step outside, to breathe deeply, and to truly soak in the wonders of the natural world. Nature was her muse. She loved reading, playing music, and creating art within nature's beauty, where she found great joy and inspiration.
Carol was predeceased by her parents Taylor and Ruth Shellhammer, and her children, Kimi Gaboury and Kirk Johnson.
She is survived by her husband Mate Szedlak, her sister Helen Good, brother Porter Shellhammer, and her children, Kit Johnson and Kerry Johnson. She also has a growing legacy of nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Carol's memory will forever echo in the hearts of those who were blessed to share in her joy of nature, art, and music.
