Dottie Slipher Gerow
September 30, 1943 -March 20, 2024
Dottie Slipher Gerow, was born on September 30th, 1943 to Margaret Propst and Russell E. Slipher Sr. at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Myers Park High School in 1961. She attended Brevard College for two years.
After college Dottie worked at the original Ivey's Department Store in uptown Charlotte until she met and married Merlin 'Mark' Gerow on March 5th, 1966. Mark was a career soldier in the U.S. Army and they traveled to Virginia and next in Pensacola, Florida where their first son, Marcus Scott, was born in 1967. Wjile Mark served a tour in Turkey, she and Marcus lived in Charlotte. In 1968 she and Marcus joined Mark in West Berlin where they lived for three years. After tours in Berlin, three at Vint Hill Farms, Virginia where second son, Kenneth Douglas was born in 1972 After Mark spent a year in Alaska the family moved to El Paso, Texas for 2 years. From 1977-80 they spent a second tour in Berlin. They returned to the USA where they were stationed in Virginia. In 1982 Mark retired and the family moved to Charlotte where they lived from 1982 to 2023. She worked in retail for over 20 years and then several years as a teacher's assistant.
Dottie was the very proud and devoted "Nana" to Kamryn born in 2008 and Brayden born in 2010, both grandchildren were born in the same hospital where she was born in 1943.
In May of 2023 she and Mark moved to Sierra Vista, Arizona where she lived with Mark in their new home until her untimely death on March 20th, 2024.
Dottie leaves behind her loving husband of 58 years, Mark of Sierra Vista, Arizona; her children Marcus (Dawn) of Hereford, Arizona, Doug (Megan) of Cherryville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Kamryn and Brayden of Hereford, Arizona; her nephew, Walter "Rusty" Schlie; and her lifetime friend, Guynn Francis of North Carolina.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret and Russell Slipher; sister, Patricia A."Patty" Schlie; and her brother, Russell E. "Butch" Slipher Jr.
Services will be held at the Southern Arizona Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, located at 1300 Buffalo Soldier Trail, Sierra Vista, Arizona, on Friday, March 29, 2024 at 2 O'Clock PM. Those who wish to attend should arrive in the staging are by 1:30 PM.
