Sergeant Major, Alfred Leonard Bernardo

Sergeant Major Alfred Leonard Bernardo (Retired) passed away on May 28, 2019.  He was born February 25, 1930, Manila, Philippines to Christina and Victoriano Bernardo.  He is survived by his wife Wilma of 55 years, son Wilfred “Freddy” (Ginger), grandchildren’s Madison and Ian of Monroe, Washington, sister Adela Alino of Isabella, Philippines and numerous nephews and nieces in California, Canada and Philippines.

He was drafted into the Army in Guam, served 29 honorable years from 1956 to 1985, retiring from Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  His overseas tours were South Korea, Germany, Brazil and Vietnam.  His US tours included Forts in Benning, Georgia; Bragg, North Carolina; Jackson, South Carolina; Bliss. Texas; Carson, Colorado; Lewis, Washington; Devens, Massachusetts; Shafter, Hawaii and finally Huachuca, Arizona.

He enjoyed serving the Army; received numerous awards, but most of all loved mentoring the young soldiers.  His awards/medals included the Legion of Merit, Joint Service Commendation, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Commendation, Army Meritorious Service, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Service, Army Overseas Service, Army NCO Professional Development and Army Good Conduct (9th award).

After retiring from the Army, he worked as a Transportation Officer at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  He was kind, quiet and hard working.  He loved to travel with his wife, and his son’s family, worked on the computer and cooked delicacies from the Philippines.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Resurrection, brothers Rudolfo, Sotero, Jesus, Roberto, Ricardo and Rafael.

Recitation of the Rosary at 8:15 AM followed by a 9:00 AM Funeral Mass on June 3, 2019, St Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 800 Andrew Drive, Sierra Vista, Arizona.  Burial at Fort Huachuca Cemetery 10:00 AM on June 4, 2019.

Dear Tita Wilma,
